Most first-time visitors know Erg Chebbi, the famous dunes at Merzouga. Fewer know that Morocco has a second, larger, and far wilder dune sea further south: Erg Chigaga, near the desert outpost of M'Hamid. If you are choosing between them, or wondering whether to add Chigaga to a longer trip, here is what actually separates the two.
Erg Chebbi and Erg Chigaga are both true Saharan dune seas, sand as far as the eye can see, but they could not feel more different on the ground. Chebbi is compact, accessible, and established. Chigaga is vast, remote, and comparatively untouched. Choosing between them is really a choice between two different kinds of desert experience.
Erg Chebbi's dunes rise up to 150 metres, the tallest in Morocco, and a paved road runs directly to the village of Merzouga at their edge. This accessibility has built an entire tourism ecosystem: dozens of established camps at every comfort level, reliable camel treks, and a short, simple journey from town to the best viewpoints. It is the right choice for most first-time visitors and anyone with limited time.
Erg Chigaga is Morocco's largest dune field, roughly 40 kilometres long and 15 kilometres wide, near the small desert town of M'Hamid. There is no paved road: reaching it means 60 kilometres of genuine off-road driving in a 4x4 across the hammada, usually with an experienced local driver. The reward is scale and solitude that Erg Chebbi, with its steady flow of visitors, cannot match. Camps here are mostly small, off-grid, and often the only structure visible in any direction.
Erg Chebbi is reached via Merzouga, roughly 9–10 hours from Marrakech or 7–8 hours from Fes by road, and the final approach is on tarmac. Erg Chigaga is reached via Zagora and M'Hamid, about 7 hours from Marrakech through the Draa Valley, followed by the off-road 4x4 crossing. Chigaga cannot be reached independently in a standard rental car: you need a local operator with proper desert vehicles.
Erg Chebbi works well on a 2- or 3-day tour: you can reach the dunes, trek in by camel, spend a night, and return without feeling rushed. Erg Chigaga rewards more time. Because of the additional driving and the off-grid nature of the camps, most operators recommend at least 4 days from Marrakech to do it justice, ideally with two nights in the dunes rather than one.
Choose Erg Chebbi if this is your first Sahara trip, your time is limited to 2–3 days, or dramatic, towering dunes close to civilisation are what you came for. Choose Erg Chigaga if you have four or more days, you have already experienced Merzouga or specifically want to avoid crowds, or true, roadless remoteness is the point of your trip. Some experienced desert travellers do both, on separate visits, and consider them entirely different destinations rather than competing options.
